About

We grow our own grain and hops in the fields around the brewery

After brewing the spent grain goes back to the animals on the farm

The Full Cycle

Our Commitment

Tucked away in the fields of Tildonk near Leuven, you can find brewery Hof ten Dormaal, an old farm estate, first mentioned in the thirteenth century as the main farm of the manor of Lauwendries.

Hof ten Dormaal is a unique concept for Belgium where farming and brewing go hand in hand.  This goes back to the ancient Belgian tradition where brewing mainly happened on the farm, with the surplus grains, in this rich, fertile region.

This tradition is revived today by the Janssens family. Under supervision of father Andre, the two brothers Jef and Dries take on the challenge of modern day brewing and farming. The brothers aim to create unique, innovating flavours, working with the purest ingrediënts from the farm.

All ingrediënts, from grain to hops, are grown on the farm. After brewing, the spent grain goes back to the farm animals, including the unique Belgian drought horses, typical for the region.

In this process we form a closed circkle, from cradle to cradle, in a unique ecologic concept.

Farm

On the fields around the brewery, we grow 15 acres of brewing barley, wheat, oats and spelt grains.

Around the farm we have two hop fields. One European style, with hopstakes, 7 meters high and one English style, 3 meters high. Furthermore we are working with the renowned university of the nearby city of Leuven to grow and harvest hops year-round in our greenhouse.

Our cows and horses are the main consumers of the spent grain from the brewery

Brewery

Since 2009 we are brewing pure, no-nonscene beers using our own ingrediënts from the farm.

After a big fire in januari 2015 we completly renewed the brewery.

Our brewing ketlles have a capacity of 5000 litres per day. We have five fermentation tanks of 5000 litres and two of 2500 litres.

Our own botteling line had a capacity of 3000 bottles per hour.
